Kafka once said that he was terrified of the photograph. On the other hand, he said, it
allows us to 'stare' -- which social decorum often finds obscene. I would add that
perhaps the imagination disallows something similar in the present. Duplication, or 'the
doppelganger' was something Kafka often resorted to in his work. How much do we read, and
how much do we 'write-into'. And are the two at times interchangeable...
